Celebrate Masturbation Month with the 10 Most Important Reasons to Have Orgasms

In case you don’t read the Internet, May is Masturbation Month.

In past years, I encouraged you to make the most of the merriness.  This year (well, in addition to my guided masturbation exercise in the Male Empowerment series), I am bringing you science! SEX SCIENCE!  Can there be a better argument for the world’s most common sex act than doing it because it is really super-duper good for your health?

You can’t do it “too much,” you won’t hurt yourself, and as long as you keep your genitals moist and/or lubed, you won’t irritate the skin.    In fact, there is only one bad way to come, and that’s if you don’t want to.  If you want to come, and you come, you did it right.  Thank you, Nature, for making it so simple.

TIP:  Since it’s in such generally short supply on the Internet, I’ll add that some common sense is required.  If your sex life takes priority over everything else, including paying your bills on time, that is a problem.  If you use toys that endanger your life, please stop.  In other words, I’m talking about risk-aware play kept in balance with a healthy life.  But you already knew that, right?

So now, read up on my pick of the top 10 medical reasons why you should stay mindful of the role orgasms play in a healthy, balanced life.   I stuck strictly to medical data for this list, and also limited this list to benefits which apply whether you do it yourself, do it with a fetish object, do it with your spouse or do it with a crowd.

Go on and treat yourself right this month — and build the skills to treat yourself right every month of your life too.  Your body will reward you for it, not just today but for the rest of your life.

10 Scientific Reasons Why Orgasm is Good for You

1   Orgasms are great for your heart’s health.  The Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health has reported that orgasms 2 or more times per week reduces men’s risk of a fatal heart attack by 50%.  Repeated heart studies have shown similar results for men of all ages.

2  Sex burns calories.   All sex burns some calories, but if you work hard for those orgasms,  men can burn up to 100 calories during sex and women can burn up to 70.   Some estimates say that 30 minutes of vigorous sex carries the same calorie burn level and health benefits of running for 15 minutes — without the wear and tear on your spine and legs.  Sex can improve your core strength and give you firmer muscles and better skin tone too.   Of course, the type of sexual activity matters.  You definitely burn more calories if you are panting and sweating in difficult positions as opposed to lying back in bed and letting a toy do all the work.

3  Orgasms increase human longevity.  DHEA is a naturally produced steroid which fights aging, bolsters your immune system, and makes your skin look young and soft too!  DHEA levels in women decline after their 20s, but the good news is that you can raise your own levels of DHEA with orgasms, thus reaping the benefits of this awesome body chemical everytime you masturbate.

4  Sex improves your blood circulation.  There is a natural biological ebb and flow of blood to your sex organs, regardless of gender.  This blood flow is necessary both to maintaining sex drive and in keeping the rest of your body’s organs healthy.  Your circulatory system is designed to interconnect your reproductive system (genitals and internal organs) with all the other major organs in your body, including heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, brain, and skin. They work in concert to give you full-body pleasure and every component benefits from the flush of sex chemicals and robust circulation that accompany arousal and orgasm.  In fact, frequent orgasm (3 to 5 times or more per week) reduces your risk of strokes up to 50%.

5  The more sex you have the better your genital health.  You’re heard of “use it or lose it.”  This applies to your sex life in general.   The best way to maintain vibrant sexual function throughout life is to include orgasms as a regular and routine part of your life (if not your day).   If you do not have orgasms on a regular basis, you increase your own risk of developing a range of sexual disorders.   If you don’t use your genitals, you will be prone to impotence and performance problems, lack of desire and diminished libido, inability to lubricate, painful intercourse (in women primarily), and dozens of other common complaints that chiefly derive from failure to maintain sexual health by actually having sex!  The less sex you have the worse the blood flow to your groin too. Poor circulation in your genital area is the culprit behind major sexual dysfunctions, including chronic impotence or inorgasmia.

6   Sex fights signs of aging.  If you have lost the “wiggle when you walk,” it could be because you don’t have as much sex as you did when you were younger.  Your pelvis knows you’re not getting enough sex!  Lack of sex has implications for many different parts of our body, including our hips, spine, joints, and muscles.   Sex keeps the joints rolling and promotes natural juices and fluids, which help forestall the drying that comes with age.  People who have a lot of sex tend to radiate — that’s because they feel younger, have more energy, stay more flexible and toned, and ultimately look and act younger than their counterparts who have given up on an active sex life.

Super-Tip:  Boost sexual function by working on your pelvic floor muscles, which control a range of functions in the urogenital tract.  Supplement your workout routines with Kegels and pelvic floor muscle exercise.  They can keep vaginas fit for sex and prevent incontinence in women.  Kegels also can keep your erections erect (i.e., angled up instead of pointing down) and prevent testicles from drooping.

7  Orgasms are great for vaginal health.  The arousal and orgasm process reduce a woman’s risk of yeast infections by refreshing the natural flora in the vagina during lubrication.  Keeping the vagina a naturally moist environment is healthy for women (and by natural, I mean she is regularly aroused).   Even better, a study at Yale University showed that women who orgasm on a frequent basis (several times a week or more) also reduce their risk of developing endometriosis.   Women who don’t have frequent orgasms are at higher risk of these and other annoying diseases.

8  Orgasms prevent prostate cancer.  According to a report by the National Cancer Institute, five or more orgasms each week lowered the risk of prostate cancer for all cismen up to 60%, while the British Journal of Urology International reported that five or more orgasms per week reduce prostate cancer risk by a third in young cismen.   The male reproductive system doesn’t just benefit by orgasm, it actually requires orgasm to stay healthy.

9  Orgasms relieve pain.  If you ever wondered why a headache or body pain seemed to go away after orgasm, it isn’t your imagination, it’s oxytocin.  A study published in Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine reported that the oxytocin naturally released during sex can reduce all forms of pain by up to 50%.   Next time some minor aches and pains get you down, reach for your groin before you reach for the aspirin.

10  Orgasms elevate your mood.   Oxytocin is a natural anti-depressant.   Once released, it fights back against the stress chemicals (specifically the stress hormone cortisol) in your body, and thereby lowers your stress level.  Medical studies have proven that orgasms lower stress, lower the incidence of depression, alleviate depressive episodes, improve mental concentration, and even make you more sociable and upbeat in a group.

Follow the science and have fun with yourself.
