7 Must-See Funny BDSM Scenes in Movies

I’m always puzzled when I review “best BDSM movie lists” and find that some of my favorite scenes aren’t even listed. I guess each of us probably has glimpsed a whip or a corset or even bondage and spanking in films that stay with us for decades, even though they will, for a wide range of reasons, never make it onto BDSM movie lists. I know more than a few Baby Boomers who were transformed when they saw John Wayne spank Maureen O’Hara in McClintock.

.

For me, it was seeing Kirk Douglas tied to a cross in Spartacus when I was five. As an already kink-leaning child, it was like a psychosexual awakening to see a handsome grown man brave such extreme bondage.

Still, I don’t think actual BDSM is well-suited to films, at least not mainstream ones, because if the bondage/punishment isn’t part of a violent narrative, then the theme often drowns in depictions of gruesome torture, non-consensual craziness, self-hatred, sexual compulsions, unhealthy relationship dynamics and other misguided and cliche assumptions about what life as a BDSMer is really like. You have to turn to Scene-generated films, like Pup —the story of gay leather leader and educator Master Skip and his pup prepping for the International Puppy Contest –to get a taste for reality-based BDSM.

But you can barely match feature movies for glimpses into BDSM with expensive sets, professional direction, professional actors, and a kind of mad anarchy that doesn’t mind straying from truth for comic effect. Here is my choice of seven movie scenes that I remember far better than the movies themselves, probably because they made me laugh so hard. They are totally off the hook so get out the popcorn and jump into these juicy bits.

7 Must-See Funny BDSM Scenes in Movies

Bitter Moon  – This bizarre little gem from director Roman Polanski features the swoonable leads, Peter Coyote and Emmanuelle Seigner, in the world’s most self-destructive BDSM relationship, as Coyote’s obsessive sadism is rivaled only by his intense masochism. It all unravels awfully in the end, but along the way there are some unforgettable BDSM dynamics. The film itself is not recommended for sensitive souls and most definitely not for kids. But seeing the stars trying to do roleplay is beyond hilarious. Here is Coyote making amends for his emotional sadism to her by begging Seigner to treat him like a pig along with other glimpses into their dysfunctional BDSM dynamic.

Personal Services – Inspired by the autobiography of infamous professional UK dominatrix, Cynthia Payne, once the grande madame of the “House of Cyn,” director Terry Jones of Monty Python fame, hits it out of the park with this explicit BDSM movie that has fun with the story of a naive waitress who becomes one of the most notorious sex-workers in the world. Here is just one Scene in which she tends to her garden of garden slaves. The whole movie is loaded with peeks into the world of BDSM/fetish fantasies and the sweet submissive men who pay big to act them out.

Marquis – My choice of weirdest film in the BDSM movie world (which is saying something!) is this puppet/claymation/people film about the personal life of the Marquis de Sade. It retells the story of the Marquis de Sade’s imprisonment for lechery and anti-establishment writings and manages to avoid the censors by letting imaginary creatures do most of the explicit scenes. Not only do the live actors wear masks, the director, French cartoonist Roland Topor, features philosophical discussions between the bestialized de Sade and his penis — which is played by a puppet. Really. Seeing is still not entirely believing. The WTF factor is strong in this one! Not surprisingly the penis dialogues are not available on YouTube, but this hilarious compilation is.

After Hours. – Buried inside this minor classic from mega-director Martin Scorsese you’ll find the deliciously sizzling Linda Fiorentino enjoying her favorite erotic pastime of bondage and domination. This 1980s comedy caper follows a night in the life of a hapless yuppie word-processing professional, beautifully played Griffin Dunne, as he tries desperately to hook up with a girl he met earlier that evening. The plot is goofy fun, and a little too complicated to explain in a paragraph, but the bondage scene was both erotic and hilarious. You’ll see why.

Wedding Crashers  If you ever thought Vince Vaughn deserved a dirty sock in his mouth, this movie delivers. Playing the love-object of a sexually obsessed and adventurous bridesmaid (energetically acted by Isla Fisher), Vaughn gets the full bondage treatment in this otherwise star-studded vanilla comedy. Directed by David Dobkin, the film is a mainly a goofy romp about womanizers getting their comeuppance. When Vaughn finally succumbs to Fisher’s charms, the bedroom hook-up is not exactly consensual but it is both hilarious and hot. In true Hollywood style, the movie ends on a sweetly romantic note. But check out the clip to see Vaughn get more than he bargained for from his charming stalker. Or maybe I just like it because Fisher’s character is aptly named Gloria. 😉

Secretary You’ve probably seen this movie. Maybe you’ve even watched it a few times for glimpses Maggie Gyllenhaal as the consummate submissive secretary and James Spader as E. Edward Grey, a kind of smarter, older brother to Christian Grey. Together, these two introverts form a strange yet sweet Master/slave relationship that may resonate with some of you. It would be hard to pick out just one clip that speaks to the Director Steven Shainberg’s spin on the romance of BDSM so here is a compilation of some of their best scenes.

Preaching to the Perverted
For a change of pace, check out Preaching to the Perverted,” a full-length feature comedy by accomplished UK director Stuart Urban, with lots of fetish clothes and a great sense of humor. Using sex clubs and femdoms to create a hilarious RomCom with all the flash and fabulousness of BDSM/fetish toys and clothes, this movie has become a cult classic. The reasons why will be obvious when you see this clip.
